Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
"At the end of the day, at the end of the week, at the end of my life, I want to say I contributed more than I criticized." -Brené Brown Dare to Lead is a fantastic book by Brené Brown and Brené Brown is a fantastic person who has dedicated her life to helping people be better leaders which is something that I totally relate with. I don't agree with everything that she says but for the most part I do agree with her. I think my biggest problem with Brené Brown and her work is that she is so incredibly infectious I think some people that follow her believe her to be the end all be all. I don't for a second think Brené thinks that about herself but her enthusiasm for what she does is so powerful I think people get lost in it. So, read her books, listen to her work, but keep reading and learning. She also has a tendency to use terms that are pretty specific to her teachings which is common with a lot of leadership gurus. It's not a big deal but it can make cross communication between followers of different gurus tougher than it need to be and that is something that I wish were different. I wish gurus would use common terms and language rather than trying to get their ideas across with unique terminology. This isn't just a Brené Brown thing it is common among leadership gurus. Dare to lead has four skills that Brené Brown talks about: Rumbling With Vulnerability, Living Your Values (Rather Than Simply Professing Them), Braving Trust (And Being The First To Trust), and Learning To Rise. Rumbling With Vulnerability"Rumbling" here is one of those terms I was talking about. It is Brené Brown's short hand for having those difficult conversations that you have to have to learn and become better but to do it in a way where you are honest and open. Living Your Values (Rather Than Simply Professing Them)Exactly what is sounds like. You can't put some values on a wall and then forget about them. You have to live your values for them to have any sort of efficacy. Braving Trust (And Being The First To Trust)Be a reliable person that others can trust. You don't have to be an open book without boundaries but you need to be open enough for trust. Learning to RiseThings will go wrong they always do. When they go wrong are you the kind of person that will start the blame game or will you try and learn from it? It is important to have a growth mindset. Leadership LessonRead Brené Brown's work and get excited about it but don't stop there. Keep reading and learning. The same is true about any of the gurus, Peter Drucker, Seth Godin, etc. Read their work and learn from them but don't think that any one of them has all the answers.
