Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. -Robert Frost When I was in 6th grade my teacher, Mrs. Elmore, started a conversation about capital punishment. I honestly have no idea how it started or if it was part of the curriculum. What I do remember is that she posed a question to the class, should capital punishment exist? Should murderers and really bad people be put to death? I remember that the class erupted into a chorus of voices all on the same side and they were all saying things like "Yeah! The bad guys should get what they deserve!" And on and on. I was quiet the whole time because I was uncomfortable with the way the class was acting. I'm sure that others were feeling the same way as me and I wanted someone else to speak up but no one did. So I swallowed and raised my hand and said something like "What if someone made a mistake and they got the wrong guy?" It was a simple question but it got the whole class talking about another perspective and I remember my teacher telling me later that she was proud of me for being brave enough to speak up and say something that was contrary to what everyone else was saying. I didn't have a title, I wasn't class president, I wasn't the toughest kid, the biggest or the most popular kid. I didn't realize it till much later but that is what being a leader is all about. It is about speaking up and acting in the way that is consistent with your conscious regardless of what others are doing. Leadership LessonDo what is right even when it is hard. Speak up even when others are actively opposing your opinion. That doesn't mean that you need to be contentious, just that you need to be bold.
