Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
"Don't hire to put out fires, hire for future growth." -Darren Hardy It can be difficult as a leader to hire. There are a few things that I like and a few things that I don't like to do when hiring someone. I don't like resumes. I know they play a purpose and I do use them when I hire but I don't like to rely on them alone. I love cover letters but I like them better when you give a prompt to the candidate. For example, "In your cover letter tell us why you think you are a good fit for our company." This does a few things; first, if they don't mention anything about that prompt you know they didn't read the job application and they probably just used a standard version of their cover letter and as a result you know they may not be super interested in your company, just a job. Secondly, you want to know the answer to this question anyway and if you get it earlier you will spend less time interviewing people that you really don't want to hire. And lastly, because you gave a prompt and made the cover letter a requirement you will get a lot less people applying for the job that are just trying to shotgun their resume, and those that do shotgun their resume will be easy to identify. Which means you spend less time hiring because your hiring process is helping you find the best and most serious candidates. Leadership LessonHiring is one of the most important things that you do. You have to hire right. Take time to do it well and come up with a hiring system that makes hiring attractive to the right people and unattractive to the wrong people. The effort that you put into your system will pay dividends in the long run over and over.
