Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss ![]() The most common form of learning and the one that people are familiar with is called intensive learning. Intensive learning involves picking a subject, let's say math, and then starting at the very basic core of that subject, say addition. You start at addition and you pound that subject into your head over and over and over, and then you move on. Once you know that part of the subject inside and out you move on to the next, let's say subtraction, and you continue in this way until you have either mastered the subject or you have learned to so thoroughly detest the subject that your brain revolts every time someone brings up the subject and your body involuntarily convulses at the thought of it. Where you end up on that spectrum depends on your personality, your teachers, and a host of other variables. But this is what most people think of when they think of learning and it can be effective particularly in a subject like math. Practically everything I learned in school I learned this way. The other way to learn is called extensive learning. Extensive learning is the way that a child learns to speak, they are introduced to a large amount of information in a variety of situations. They hear people speaking constantly and their brain starts to pick up patterns as it filters through massive amounts of information subconsciously. In other words, rather than just repeating one word to your child non-stop and not letting them hear another word until they can say that one you expose your child to constant extensive language and your child intuitively learns how to speak. They can't tell you the rules of grammar but they know them intuitively. I have found that I learn much better and that I enjoy the process of learning much more when I study extensively rather than intensively. If you are an intensive learner I encourage you to try extensive learning. If you are trying to learn something try immersing yourself in it. If you want to learn something find everything that you can on the subject and listen to, read, or watch it once and move on to the next thing. Don't worry that you didn't understand everything. The goal isn't to understand everything, the goal is to immerse yourself in the process and to find joy in it. You can learn either way, intensively and extensively. You can beat yourself over the head with whatever you want to learn and move step by step. People do it every day and it works. It isn't very fun though and I find that I don't get excited about what I'm learning when I am learning intensively. I do get excited and I do have fun when I'm learning extensively. Leadership LessonAll leaders should be lifetime learners. One of the things that I think leaders should study their entire lives is leadership. If you want to be a great leader you should learn as much as you can about the subject. I recommend learning about leadership by using the extensive learning method, immerse yourself in the wealth of knowledge that has been left us by the great leaders of the world in the books and recordings that they have left us as well as the literature and ideas that inspired them.
