Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
I am not a teacher but an awakener. –Robert Frost Praise Effort “If a cat sits on a hot stove, that cat won't sit on a hot stove again. That cat won't sit on a cold stove either. That cat just don't like stoves.” ― Mark Twain Sometime managers unintentionally discourage people from taking initiative because they got angry at someone that tried something new and failed. It is important to praise people for making an effort to do something new even if it doesn't work out. Whatever you do don't punish someone for doing something new and failing. You will only hurt your own progress. Feed Forward vs FeedbackThe idea here is that when you give feedback you should really be giving feed forward meaning that it should be focused on the future. You can't change the past so don't live there. Focus on what to do next not on how they messed up. Learn togetherPeople are more open to learning if they feel like you are working together. If you are acting like an expert and are constantly talking to them like you are a teacher you will meet resistance. You can always learn more so you might as well join them on their journey and learn together. Both of you will get more mileage out of the experience. Use Questions not answersIt is better to use open ended questions to teach than to simply give people the answers. They are more likely to internalize it and remember it if they come to the conclusion themselves. Leadership LessonsMentoring is an important part of leadership and being a good mentor is no small task. Take time to learn how to teach well. I recommend this book to all leaders and managers that would like to help their people learn and grow.
