Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
"It's a strength to be a leader that doesn't have all the answers." -Johnathan Raymond In the book Good Authority by Johnathan Raymond the author talks about how to be a good leader. There is no way that I can fit all of my favorite parts of the book in this one post because it is so good but there is one thing that I wanted to touch on. He calls it moving from Superman to Yoda. SupermanIf you are a Superman you think of yourself as the hero. You think your greatest contributions are the ideas that you bring to the table and the last minute changes that you make to a project to make it perfect. You can tell you are the Superman if whenever you present an idea to the team they instantly agree with you. No one challenges your ideas. This might feel good to your ego, in fact it feels so good that it is almost an addiction, but it isn't great for the team or for the company. They may be agreeing with you to your face but you will never know what they honestly think unless you take the time to gently coax it from them. YodaWhat you need to be as a leader is a Yoda. By this Johnathan Raymond means you need to be more of a coach than a superstar. I love this quote "The highest form of leadership, the most value you can add to your team, organization, and to the world around you is to develop the strength to not give people the answers. Rather, your job is to create a space where they can discover the answers for themselves." And this quote sums up the book really well "Your goal isn't to have the right answers but to ask the right questions." Truly, if you can learn how to ask the right questions the team will come up with the right answers. Not only will they be the right answers but they will be more creative and more effective than the right answer that you came up with yourself. Your job as a leader is to effectively nurture and harness the collective mental and physical powers and talents of your team. Two heads are better than one but an entire team truly united under one leader is unstoppable. Leadership LessonAs a leader your true goal isn't to be the best at everything your team does. It isn't to have all the right answers. Your job as a leader is to unite the team, get them in sync, point them in the right direction, and help them stay focused. Learn to ask the right questions and to listen to the answers that your team comes up with.
