Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
The way we see the ‘problem’ is the problem. -Stephen R. Covey I recently finished Stephen R. Covey's book The 8th Habit and in that book he talks about what he calls the four intelligences to a person. The four intelligences are; 1-Physical, 2-Mental, 3-Emotional, 4-Spiritual. Good leaders will focus on all four of the sides of a person yet most people are hired for their physical, mental, or both of those two sides. The emotional and spiritual sides of an employee are often neglected. Stephen Covey doesn't encourage an overly emotional or spiritual work environment what he means by emotional is that people should have passion for what they do. Spiritual means that they feel like their work has meaning and purpose beyond making money. Stephen Covey also talks about the 5 Cancerous Behaviors which are; Criticism, Complaining, Comparing, Competing, and Contending. These are all behaviors that inhibit people from becoming great and that also keep companies and organizations from becoming great. One of the main reasons that these behaviors occur in organizations is because there is a lack of trust. Trust is a key element in an organization and if you have anyone of these 5 behaviors you need to figure out where trust has broken down and fix it immediately. Leadership LessonYour employees are whole people and you must take care of the whole person. Find ways to help their work be more fulfilling in all four areas. Also, watch for the 5 Cancerous Behaviors and if you see any of them, hunt down where trust has broken down in your organization and fix it without delay.
