Meditations On Leadership
These are my thoughts on leadership related topics and ideas. It is meant to be a sort of journal for me and if you find it useful than I am happy to have helped.
"Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize them." -Ann Landers One of the things that I learned from The Wealthy Gardener that I really liked is that you shouldn't do what you love. I know that sounds kind of crazy but the idea is sound. I'm not disagreeing, so much, with the mantra "Do what you love" but I like the clarification that The Wealthy Gardener brings to this common idea. Here is a section from the book that explains a little better: “If you engage in a service that feels right, that’s comfortable for you, that you can be friends with, and that only asks you to be yourself, then that is your path. Don’t ask a vocation to be a passionate lover. Rather, consider it an enduring friendship that you want to spend time with daily.” -The Wealthy Gardener "Doing what you love" sounds like a romanticized thought. You aren't always going to love what you are doing because sometimes it is going to feel like work and not romance. But "doing what you can be friends with" is something that I can agree more fully with. Don't do what you love. Do what you can be friends with. Leadership LessonThink of your work as a friend not as a lover. I believe that is a more healthy relationship for you, your family, and your work. Sometimes work will feel like, well, work. That's ok. Sometimes you will have a bad day and you will just need some space from your work and that is ok too. Work should be a friend and if you are lucky it will be a good friend.
